Internship

There are two possibilities:

1. Internship as en employee after studies

A person who wishes to do an apprenticeship in a company as a continuation of a previous education, attested by a diploma or a certificate of studies, or to do an training course in a company as part of his/her professional activities, must apply for a single permit.

If the single permit is granted, the Belgian Office for foreigners will send a copy of the decision to the embassy competent for the applicant's place of residence. For a single permit please get in touch with your employer.

For more information please consult our "Employee worker (single permit)" section.

2. Traineeship in the context of studies

The regulation on the single permit does not apply to a student who does a compulsory traineeship as part of his or her studies in Belgium, or in a Member State of the European Economic Area, or in the Swiss Confederation.

In this case, the traineeship is an integral part of their studies and you would need a student visa.

In any case, the company/organism which offers you the internship should check with the competent authority if you need a work permit (single permit) or if you are exempted. It’s the responsibility of the employer to verify whether a work permit is required or not. Even for internships.

The competent authority depends on the place of your internship. Your employer should contact the team “work permit” at the competent region.

For more information please consult our "Student" section.
