Social security

Information about your social security abroad.

The Embassy of Belgium in Budapest is not competent for social security matters, neither in Belgium nor in Hungary but those who are going to live, work or study abroad can use the social security website to find out which Belgian social security rights they can retain. In the section Leaving Belgium, you will find information related to your social security rights abroad.

For all your questions concerning social security, we recommend that you turn to your Belgian mutual health organisation or contact the Hungarian service Nemzeti Egészségbiztosítási Alapkezelő (or the National Institute for the Administration of Health Insurance Funds):

Address: 1139 Budapest, Váci út 73/A.

You are entitled to a pension or annuity under Belgian law only? You can obtain a Hungarian social security number (TAJ) in the following way.

With form S1, you can make sure you get what you are entitled to if you will work or have worked in another EU country as a national of an EU country.

This form is valid if you are officially resident in an EU country, regardless of your nationality.

If a person working and insured in the territory of an EEA Member State (EU countries + Iceland, light support, Norway) has a permanent residence in Hungary, he/she is also entitled to full health care in kind in Hungary based on a certificate issued by the competent (foreign) insurer. With a so-called S1 form, you can demonstrate that you are entitled to healthcare if you do not live in the country where you are insured. Useful for posted workers, frontier workers, pensioners, civil servants and those maintained by them.

You should ask your S1 form to your health insurer (mutual insurance company). You must then submit the completed S1 form to your local Hungarian administration (kormanyablak) or to the government office (Kormányhivatal) of your county (megye). To get more information and make an appointment, call the general telephone number 1818 and dial "English" if you do not speak Hungarian.

You can find more information about the S1 form on this page
